eliminate negative thinking

“Whatever your mind can conceive and believe the mind can achieve, regardless of how many times you may have failed in the past.” Napoleon Hill – 1883 – 1970.

8 ways to eliminate negative thinking.

The main thing that stands in the way of getting what you want are your limiting beliefs and unless this is addressed, your subconscious mind will always veto your hearts desire.

Why? Because you can tell yourself (consciously) all you like, that you want this or that, but if you believe (subconsciously) that for some reason it’s unobtainable, you’re snookered.

Here’s an example; if you were brought up in a home where the underlying belief system was one of “nothing comes easy” or “life is a struggle” then this could quite possibly be an unconscious self-limiting belief which prevents you from having or enjoying the things in life you desire.

You may wish for wealth, health, love, happiness or emotional freedom but the truth will reign… your truth.

If your conscious mind constantly reinforces negative thoughts such as “I can never be wealthy, life is a struggle.” Or I can never be healthy because poor health runs in the family.” Your belief system is compromised. It is limited. These are just a couple of examples of self-limiting beliefs but our subconscious mind cannot and does not distinguish between negative and positive. It simply endeavours to bring into our lives that which we think about most.

Many of you will recognise some or all of the following nuggets of wisdom, which I propose are written in the book of life with indelible ink because they somehow ring true. The words feel true. Although I concede not so for everyone, nevertheless, here goes…

“We are shaped by our thoughts, we become what we think. When the mind is pure, joy follows like a shadow that never leaves.” – Buddha

For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.” – Proverbs 23:7

Keep your thoughts positive because your thoughts become your words. Keep your words positive because your words become your behaviour. Keep your behaviour positive because your behaviour becomes your habits. Keep your habits positive because your habits become your values. Keep your values positive because your values become your destiny.” – Mahatma Gandhi

“If you realized how powerful your thoughts are, you would never think a negative thought.” – Mildred Lisette Norman AKA Peace Pilgrim

I can almost hear some of you shouting; “But I have no control over my thoughts!” or “It’s all very well telling yourself to think positive when your life is a bed of roses! But what if it actually isn’t?”

Here comes another one of those quotes…

“See the positive side, the potential, and make an effort.” – Dalai Lama

There, I said it, or rather the Dalai Lama said it… Effort. And it takes a little, but not a lot.

So here are 8 ways to eliminate negative thinking. A few suggestions to help your change your thought patterns, turning negative thinking into positive thinking;

Can I call you back

  1. Hypnotherapy – hypnosis will help you relax allowing your noisy conscious mind to quiet down enough for you to access the thoughts and beliefs that are currently being stored in the subconscious mind and holding you back from being the best you can be. We can identify negative thoughts, perhaps thoughts you never even realised you had, reprograming the mind to replace negative or unwanted thought patterns with new ones that will better serve you.
  2. Meditate, practice mindfulness, yoga or Tai Chi – These practices don’t just calm the mind, recent studies have shown they may even affect our DNA. There’s evidence that such “mind-body practices” dampen the activity of genes associated with inflammation, essentially reversing molecular damage caused by stress.
  3. Surround yourself with positive people – this isn’t always as easy as it sounds. However, you can start by writing down the qualities of the people you spend the most time with. Would you call them positive people? Happy? Now think of how they interact and affect you. If you feel happy and energized after spending time with them then you’re on the right track, but if there are more cons’ than pros’ – spend less time around them. Period.
  4. Own it! Don’t play the victim. You create your life – take responsibility.
  5. Practice GRATITUDE. There is significant scientific literature showing that people who feel gratitude are less likely to be depressed and worried and more likely to feel satisfied with their lives. Find something, no matter how big or small, to be grateful for everyday – try spending a few moments first thing in the morning to practice gratitude and your days will soon start to become more positive and uplifting.
  6. Smile. I have spoken of the significance of smiling in a previous blog but there can never be enough said about the ancient art of the smile J The act of smiling activates neural messaging that benefits your health and happiness. The serotonin release brought on by your smile serves as an all-natural anti-depressant – no prescription required.
  7. Sing like nobody’s listening! Research on West Kent and Medway singing groups has shown that singing improves people’s mental health and wellbeing, including reducing anxiety, stress and depression. Take it one step further and dance like nobody’s watching.
  8. Be kind. Be kind to yourself. Be kind to others. Many psychologists believe we’re hard-wired for empathy. After all, cooperative behaviour allowed our ancestors to survive under harsh conditions. However, there is little denying that most of us feel fulfilled and energized when helping or giving to others, and being kind to ourselves matters just as much. People who are kinder to themselves tend to be happier overall.

There is hard science behind the concept of happy thoughts and positive thinking, not only does It support brain growth but according to a recent study from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, having an optimistic outlook on life and a general expectation that good things will happen may even help us to live longer.
