Celebrity therapist, now that’s an interesting title. You may be wondering… am I suggesting that I am the celebrity or that my clients are celebrities?
Wonder no more. I am not a celebrity (unless you were privy to my dream last night when President Obama and I were dancing to Ameno Amapiano – You want to Bamba? which I imagine would have made me something of a celebrity)
No, I am not the celebrity however, I do have the privilege of working with some very high profile clients.
The fact is, emotional and mental health issues do not discriminate.
The rich and famous regardless of age, class, race, gender or political persuasion experience emotional and psychological problems just like anyone else and their struggles (although they may seem out of the ordinary) are just as real.
Imagine your life and everything you do being scrutinised and judged by millions of people around the world. Imagine having to read about and listen to constant criticism. How people didn’t like your work, what you said last week, what you stand for, maybe how they didn’t like your hair, your outfit, your partner, your children, where you went on holiday or what you ate for lunch!
Many people wish for fame and public recognition. We’ve seen an exponential rise in people becoming famous overnight, reality TV, Social Media influencers, socialites, TikTokers, YouTubers. You’ve only got to ask a handful of young people today what they’d like to be when they grow up, and most will probably say; “famous” and that’s it. Famous for what? Maybe it doesn’t even matter…for now.
Whether you’re on TV, in film, a musician, a politician, singer, dancer, professional sports person or stand-up comedian, fame, whilst it can provide all the trappings of a luxurious lifestyle, can also have a negative impact on your life and how you live it.
With fame comes a whole set of problems that most people will never understand. The pressure of fame and the fear of losing it, expectations, exhausting schedules, being away from home, scandals, people selling stories, law suits, trust issues and the like, can cause any number of mental health issues that can lead to substance abuse, eating disorders, anxiety, depression, fears and phobias, self-harm, paranoia and even suicide.
Fame can cause you to lose trust in others, not knowing who has your best interest at heart can prevent you from reaching out and seeking help and can lead to insecurity, isolation and reclusiveness. Something as simple as popping to the shops or eating out can be nightmarish, forging new friendships, having relationships, who you can rely on, unsure if people want to be with you for you… or for what you can do for them.
Very often the line between your celebrity- self and your authentic self becomes blurred and there will come a time when you will need to re-group and re-balance.
