stage fright

Racing pulse, hyperventilating, dry mouth, tight throat, trembling of the hands, knees, lips and voice, sweaty palms, nausea, blurred vision, the urge to run and hide. sound familiar? Enter stage left, or to be more precise, stage fright.

Whether you are a singer or musician, dancer, actor, athlete or public speaker, stress and anxiety about performing in front of people can cause performance anxiety and prevent you from showcasing your true talent.

And if you have suffered from any of the above before going on stage, into a sports arena or just standing in front of a crowd, you’re in good company.

Stage fright affects most performers at some point during their careers. Adele, Rod Stewart, Barbra Streisand, Andrea Bocelli and Chris Hoy have all suffered with stage fright also know as performance anxiety.

Adele once said, ‘With my stage fright, I just don’t want to let people down. I get so nervous on stage that I don’t have the guts to improvise or anything like that.’ It has been reported that Adele has been able to overcome the issue with Hypnosis. A healthy level of anticipation and nerves before a performance is a positive thing, because it demonstrates that you take your performance seriously and care about the outcome.

But if this level increases to the point where there are feelings of nausea, distress and panic attacks, you can end up giving a less than perfect performance and lose confidence altogether.

Hypnotherapy can help you re-frame and redirect negative thoughts, beliefs, images, and predictions about performing in public. Transforming fears and vulnerabilities into powerful tools to help you perform at your very best.

One of the many techniques I teach my clients in therapy is diaphragmatic breathing. It’s a super fast and simple way to reduce fear and anxiety, to break the fight or flight response and to go from stress to calm and realxed. This breathing method can be done anywhere, anytime and only takes a minute.
