We’ve all heard the phrase “With the benefit of hindsight.” But what about the benefit of foresight? The ability to predict future events before they happen? Is it possible? Can you predict the future?
It’s important to have a long-term view of our future, where we’re headed and an idea of how we might get there, it’s a fundamental requirement for success in life, without it, we would stumble head first into every given situation blindfolded and fingers crossed.
The world around us is changing rapidly, so rapidly that it can be exhausting just trying to keep up. So my question is; how can we prepare for the future? Can we develop foresight?
One of my 3 favourite movies of all time (Constantine and Sixth Sense being the other two if you’re wondering) is Minority Report. A thought-provoking, sci-fi fantasy world where a trio of “precogs” have foresight. They are able to see into the future, thus alert the police and prevent bad things from happening. It was a thrill ride and all was well in the end, although ultimately it was decided that seeing into the future had a few downsides.
But having just a hint of foresight could give us increased power to shape our future, even in these turbulent times. Those who are able to think ahead will be better prepared to see and to take advantage of new opportunities, not to mention, avoid the pitfalls that befall others. We can predict the weather right? So, how hard can it be?
Imagine being one step ahead of the game, predicting the future, identifying consumer demands and trends before they happen (Example Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos) or see potential threats and avoid them before they become a crises? And what about when it comes to making major life decisions? i.e. whether or not to have a vaccine against covid19, enter into a new relationship, change your job or career, to have a family, buy a house, a new car, imagine how easy life would be with the benefit of foresight.
Interestingly though, as we grow from childhood into adulthood we all develop a variety of ways for thinking about and second-guessing future events, most of them without being consciously aware of what we’re doing or how we’re doing it. There has been some interesting research showing that the human brain makes judgments and decisions rapidly and automatically which must surely mean that our subconscious mind continuously makes predictions about future events, albeit mostly based on a vast store of past experiences, but this is not always the case.
In hypnotherapy we use metaphor and subliminal suggestion to encourage and develop foresight. For instance, imagining yourself 6 months from now having lost your excess weight or seeing yourself healthier, wealthier, happier, free from stress and anxiety, having broken the habit, overcome the addiction etc. This has a profound effect on the subconscious mind, by literally seeing your future, aka “Future Life Progression”.
Food for thought.
